Comparison is the Thief of Joy

When I was about 10 years old,I noticed something about myself;I'd always been pretty tall for my age. Me and one of my sisters were always the Glamazon queens in elementary school and throughout. And it would ALWAYS bother me.My peers could say something as little as "Oh but you're tall, so you don't have the problem." In my head I'd be like, "I have problems!" I wanted to empathize with my shorter counterparts.I would even dread the check ups at the doctor and close my ears to the sounds of me growing another half inch.  In school pictures, we were always in the middle to back row, normally reserved for the pubescent boys. For years,I would ever so slightly hunch my back when I walked or slouch in my seat .It made me look shorter, and thus more girly and feminine because height was something I typically associated with masculinity (as illogical as that sounds).I was usually seen as one of the guys as my shorter my girly looking female counterparts etched hearts on their notebooks and made MASH games of the popular guys in our class(talk about a throwback). That could never be me! I would look others in this adolescent envy because I wanted to be like them and live the life they lived. But because I was tall AND plus sized, that could never be.Fast forward 10 or so years later, that growth spurt has slowed down and my height has actually come into some very good uses. Can't reach that shelf?I GOT THIS! Does my 5'6 frame work perfectly to model those shoes?!Why of course! There were so many great things about being taller that I had never stopped to think about. And it wasn't until I stopped looking at the qualities and characteristics that I didn't have that I was able to focus on my God given assets.

It's taken me some time to learn that what God has carved for another, will not also be for me. I mean I can seriously look at the lives of others around me and think 'what am I doing wrong?" But I also found that in praying for the discernment I need to take me on MY journey, that someone else's path may have also been constructed with battles of their own. To compare someones bank account or businesses or relationships with that of your own is allowing the enemy to steal the joy that is yours. Suppose the young lady who has her own apartment and has the flyest gear has done so in a way that is not of God? Would you want it then?

In moving in decency and in order on God's path for ME,I have learned several things.

1. Count your own blessings and not the blessings of someone else- 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12

2. Don't fall prey to feelings of envy-Proverbs 14:30

3. Look to the Word for your next steps, not your friends (at any stage in your life)- Romans 12:2

Comparisons are misleading. They allow us only to see what we want to see in the context of what we want at the moment. But if we continue to hold fast and true to our teachings,we will soon understand that no two men are made the same. My Chapter 1 will not be the same as my mother's Chapter 20.In other words, the middle of someone's journey will not look the same as the beginning of your own. But that's not for you to ponder or fret about.  Each of us has to endure different battles. Just remember to give God your all in everything. And it will be well.

OOTD: Cool Color Combos

Happy Sunday! I hope you're enjoying the days after Christmas and the time you've spent with cousins you haven't seen in years and eating foods you'll be giving up in a few weeks.

Today I want to talk about amazing combinations. Items that are Perfect for one another.Things that you can't mention without their counterpart. Peanut  butter and jelly. Fish and chips. Cell phone and a charger. Wearing glasses and being smart. I'm not so sure about that last one but you get the point. Combinations can add pizzazz or add those finishing touches needed to make a meal or outfit great. One of my favorite color combos is gray and green. An olive or hunter green to be exact. There's something serene and relaxed about the two colors together that still scream sleek and sheek at the same time.

This long wool duster is from Forever 21+ a couple seasons back. And I promise it's not as itchy as it looks. I know dusters are in for the season, and while I love them, not all of them are as thick as I need them to be. I'm ALWAYS cold,so this sweater keeps me warm. The marled effect adds some extra color to the outfit.

This midi dress is also from Forever 21+. I got it in the summer and quickly learned it was more suited for the colder months. There's an additional lining inside of the dress that adds more warmth. During the hot and hazy summer, this was NOT BBQ attire. In the winter, the extra layer helped to create nice, clean lines and layers that kept me warm. The length was also a plus as it was kind of windy today.

If you couldn't tell already, I love a chunky heeled bootie. These ones from Charlotte Russe gave me the right amount of balance. My mom looks at me in shock every time I step out in something higher than 6 inches. It's my way of keeping the day exciting. High heels, higher standards. The suede material may not be the best when the snow starts to fall,so I'm wearing them before that time comes.

Last but not least, let's talk about this  eye candy around my neck. This necklace is a unique and handmade creation from a local store owner here in the Poconos. She'll get her own post soon, but check out her Facebook page here. The intricate design (check out those leaves!) was just what I needed to add some excitement to the otherwise quiet ensemble.

What are some of your favorite color combinations? Leave a comment below!

I loved them so much I got a pair in each color the boutique carried. Look at the detail on the purple snake skin pair.*swoon* I'm seeing a vision of all white for the red pair. Stay tuned.

The C. Label heeled boots are the perfect winter wear for the season. Equipped with a rubber some, these babies make it easy to navigate the snow, and they manage to keep your feet warm at the same time. Never one to skimp on the glamorous accents, I couldn't keep my eyes off of the chain around the ankle. I've dressed them up and dressed them down. Perfection!

Next up we have the Marilyn Moda Military/chic inspired boots.  These boots are my go-to when I need to run errands and just be casual for the day. With an easy in an out due to the side zipper, these boots are great for the on-the-go mom looking to stay fashionable.

The Caliente thigh high boots are true to their name. They're truly hot, hot, hot! The zipper detail is unique,as it wraps around the boot in a diagonal pattern. They're perfect for the larger calves and wider foot,as the material is a nice stretch. Also perfect for the winter!

And calling all of my purse lovers! The Leona tote and many other beautiful additions just arrived at Step N' out on Faith Shoe Salon and are waiting to be claimed. I'm in love.

Don't Settle for Knockoffs

Think about something you REALLY want. Something that you normally see on a window shopping excursion( I know I'm not alone). It could be the newest Vera Wang,or even the latest pair of Jordans (A blessed afternoon to my male readers! *says a quick prayer for increase*) For me it's this trench jacket from Kierra Sheard's new line eleven60.

If you're like me,most likely it's something you normally only dream of having. You've walked past the store several times and the price remains the same ridiculously high price as it was months before. Now,you've decided that you're going to get that item if it's the last thing you do. You picked up a part time job specifically to dedicate your paychecks to the item of your dreams. You work day in and day out until finally you're 90% of the way there. You can smell the new and unused amazingness right beneath your nose. But then...you happen to be online window shopping one day,and you find said item on Aliexpress for 70% of the 90% you have. So you get to have what you've wanted AND you'll have some coins leftover! What a steal!
Except...you know this store to sell some pretty convincing name brand items only for them to wind up being not so authentic. You knew this as you pressed "Place My order",but you did it anyway. And as you unwrap your new purse,or pair of shoes, you're not feeling so satisfied anymore. So you went all that way and essentially you cheated yourself for a less than mediocre version of the same. When you could have worked an extra day or two and that shiny new object could have been yours.

Depressing right?

So I have a question. If you wouldn't settle for a less than authentic Coach bag,or a knock off pair of Loubs....why then do we settle for a less  than authentic relationship with God?

Joshua 24:16-18 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods! It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. And the Lord drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.”

I'm not here to speak of other religions,or even my own. I speak only of the consistent nature in which we do other things during our day or even in our lifetime. We can get up and go to work. We can remember to watch our favorite shows. We can remember to get our nails and eyebrows done. Religiously. But when it comes to saying a simple prayer in the morning or attending a Sunday service,we save these special activities only for a week or two out of the month. My biggest problem with that is,we (myself included) work so very hard and diligently in forming a relationship with others before our God. Our boyfriends or girlfriends,or the friends who don't step foot into a church except for Easter and New Year's Eve. Are you satisfied with that? No? So why settle?

I want to give you a homework assignment. For the rest of this week,I want you to do more than you have in solidifying your relationship with God. Haven't been to church in a month? Go this Sunday. Did you pray this morning when you woke up? Say a prayer tonight. Were your words the reason behinds someone's tears? Ask forgiveness. Whatever you were today, aim to be better tomorrow. Just as you wouldn't settle for anything less than the best appearance, don't settle for a half relationship with the Lord. He's waiting.

Leave a comment, quip,or anecdote  below at the end of this week about that experience. How did you feel? What did you take from it? I can't wait to hear from you.

Stay encouraged,
Brieana.

Repetition is Key

Repetition- (n.) the recurrence of an action or an event.

When it comes to my fashion choices this is one of my favorite words. I repeat slot of staples in my closet because why not? For me,it's not just about dressing up. It's about how I felt at the moment. And those different moments call for a different top with the same jeans,a different shoe with the same dress,or that favorite sweater with...everything.

On today's list of repeats we have my floppy hat in burgundy. This hat is super versatile! Besides the vibrant color,it literally dresses up everything. I've worked  it with maxi dresses, bathing suits, a pair of jeans...you name it! And if you just twist it the tiniest bit you add a bit of sultry to any outfit too. I wore it a few months back in the summer with this Aztec tribal dress from
Haute life plus. The hat is perfect all year around. Protecting me from the rain and sun.

This mustard yellow top is from H&M  that I got some years back. It has a high low effect, which makes the bottom options nearly endless. I tucked it in this morning (my first time doing so) and I instantly found a new way to wear it. The top has a sweater feel to it,but it's kind of thin. I threw a  leather jacket over it and I was good to go.

Now normally I don't match my hats or shirt with my shoes, but I couldn't resist. The burgundy with the mustard yellow was a great combination. The booties are a tiny 4 inches so it practically felt like I was wearing flats.

Repeating my fashion choices allows me to be thankful for the things that I have and the many ways that I can use them. Your shopping budget doesn't need to be extensive in order be fashion forward. It's all about being creative. Recycling isn't only good for the Earth. It's good for the pockets. Now excuse me while I go find some more gems in my closet I might have forgotten about.

Brieana

Casual Friday

I love the cold weather. Now I know last week I was raving about the warm Sunday weather, but there's just something refreshing about crisp, cool air. It's nice to see the transformation of the leaves and grass after the cold months of wilting away. It's like their own personal testimony of re-birth.

Most people don't love the colder months because at first glance, it's just a hassle to wear so many pieces of clothing.  I see it as a perfect time for some great coats, sweaters and winter boots. What better way to show off your wardrobe than a layer by layer reveal of fashion?!

First, excuse me for my excitement at this AMAAAAZING sweater! I got this from an online boutique i stumbled upon in IG called Dakota Houston.  A store after my own heart,Dakota Houston caters to the spiritually sound woman of today with timeless and unique pieces for all sizes.

And no,you're not seeing things...that is in fact,a woman's FACE embroidered on the back of my sweater! Cool right?! I couldn't pass it up. Many IG boutiques ares carry a lot of the same trends throughout the seasons,so unfortunately there's not a lot of variety from store to store. But I hadn't seen this sweater anywhere. And we're made to stand against the masses right?

My green riding pants and chunky boot are from Rainbow. I used to shop there when I still lived in the hood of Paterson and I haven't stopped yet and don't plan to! Their clothes are affordable, versatile, and their shipping speed is one to beat.

Today's Casual Friday made me appreciate the cool weather. I know we all love the sun, sand, and ice cream. But there's a time and place for everything. Especially the seasons. I'll see you all soon as I pull out my parkas and put away the open toed shoes. Make sure to bundle up!

Be Anxious for Nothing

I was talking to one of my best friends the other day. I'm so proud of her. She just graduated from a Medical assistant program. She moved out of her family's house into her own apartment. She has a full time, good paying job. Still, despite all of those accomplishments and blessings,my best friend was sitting before me talking about going to the military

Now...before I continue let me prefix this by saying I have no problems with the military. I believe it truly grooms and yields some courageous and wonderful men and  who I cannot thank enough for their service. That being said, I know a few of those individuals who were ready for a commitment like that out of the womb, or as a continued tradition in family lineage. None of the above was the case for my friend. When I asked why...it was the story I had heard many times before. "I feel like I should be doing more." So at that moment..I had to say a quick prayer to speak the right words. And what was laid upon my heart was "Let God do his thing."

Jeremiah 29:11-13 states,
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Growing into adulthood, this scripture has really been one of solace for me. Because at the age of 25,I look around and find that a lot of people my age come to a place of uncertainty when "WE" feel within ourselves we haven't got it all together just yet. When "WE" feel like we should be driving around in a BMW instead of a 2005 Toyota. When "WE" feel that we should be owner of Fortune 500 company...right this second. But in that,we often forget who has allowed us this far. I attest ALL of my success to the grave and mercies of my Lord and savior. And while it's easy for me to look at what may have gone wrong,I have prayed for the discernment to instead look at what have gone right. A bachelor's degree. A master's degree. My own vehicle. My eyes,my ears,my hands, and my feet.  Are you with me?

Sometimes our flesh leads us to be anxious about the future. Anxious about how great we will be. How fast we will be great? I say to that...slow down. Take the time to allow God to mold you into receiving the success that you will inevitably be. Read, meditate, and continuously pray that what he has for you will be so great it'll even exceed your own expectations. Life comes with its uncertainties. But what we can be certain of is that the everlasting and one true God is for sure. And for us. Stay encouraged.

Brieana

OOTD:December 13,2015

I walked out of the house this morning and the weather read 68 degrees. Fahrenheit. In the middle of December. I had to take a couple of minutes to really praise and adore my God for his continuous miracles and wonders.  67 degrees?! In December? When the weatherman would tell us it's supposed to be snowing?! Sometimes we forget how miraculous and awe inspiring he is. To shift the atmosphere in a way none of us could ever imagine. This morning I understood that I am but a small part of God's giant presence...and for that I am thankful.

The GORGEOUS weather gave me the opportunity to wear a couple of pieces I wouldn't normally wear in December. I had to take full advantage because you never know God's plans for the seasons. So I threw on this Olive duster from Haute life plus. The material was very light and breathable (two words I would ,again...not use in the winter months).

The gold accents on the shoulders and adjustable sleeves had me sold. Just the right amount of glamour for an already beautiful color. On the inside, I donned my favorite black jumper. I got this from ASOS a couple of seasons back. It was the perfect layering piece to place underneath my duster. I've worn this in so many different ways that I'm sad for the day it fades. It has pockets and makes the outfit all the more functional since the duster does not.
My brown booties only just saw the light of the day this year. (Thank God again for the opportunity to be seasonably inappropriate) They're super old but so comfy. The chunky heel makes all the running around I do on Sunday a breeze. I even had to make sure my feet were fully manicured for the peep toe in the front.

Today was a beautiful day for light and open pieces. I'm forever grateful to have gotten that chance. Remember to be thankful for it all. Even the sun shining on a "winter" December Sunday. Just God's daily reminder of who's in control. The comfort I feel in that is immeasurable. Not in fabric weights. Not in heels inches. Just in his eternal blessings.

Brieana

Friday Fashion Feature:Rebdolls

Happy Friday everyone! On Fridays I want to shine a spotlight on the places that have me looking fabulous. First up...a store by the name of Rebdolls. They're an on line store for the plus sized diva. They sell sizes 10 to 28 and really catch your curves. Literally! With their store stocked full of skirts, two-piece crop sets and crop tops (hello faux abs!) Rebdolls has us SET all year round. I recently started shopping with them and I wasn't disappointed.
First up we have the "Rose from the Concrete dress", such a flattering number.

The material is a nylon spandex stretch, and I didn't even need any Spanx! The pattern on the dress is gorgeous and it had me looking my Sunday best. Another plus is their amazing customer service and their IG page that is truly dedicated to their curvy divas. I was blessed to receive a shout out the day I wore this dress. I felt IG famous for a good hour or so. Look at your neighbor and say "FAVOR!"

A huge shout out to my baby Hank the Tank for providing some amazing backdrop for these shots!

My other purchase was a more casual look. The Rebdolls essential crew neck midi dress is perfect for everyday errands, especially for the sometimes frosty, but still unseasonably warm weather of the Poconos.
One of the other things I love about the store is that a lot of their dresses come in these unique and amazing colors. I had to resist the urge to pick this number up in every color! I just paired it with my pal Chuck Taylor and off I went. It was super comfy. This dress is versatile as I have plans to dress it up very soon. Stay tuned.

Both of these dresses and a ton of other items are on sale ALL weekend from Rebdolls. Check them out and tell them I sent you!

Stepping Out

*deep breath*

Have you ever...wanted to try something new? And before you even take that first step you imagine all of the worst case scenarios within that something new that can and will go wrong?

What will they think?
What do I write?
What if I get writer's block?
What if?..What if...What if...

*cue inspirational music* Here I go..

In a couple of sentences...I am what you would call a former ratchet, hailing from Paterson, New Jersey who takes a special interest in learning, leading, and shopping. My thighs take up half my body.I have 2 degrees and am currently working on my License in Social Work. I love the Lord. Sarcasm is my 2nd tongue. With all of that said, what do I do with that package of fantastic?! Answer: SOMETHING.

I made a vision board at the end of 2014. On that board I had all of these fantastic pictures of apartments, degrees from various universities, and California (I'm a Valley girl at heart). Missing from that board? Starting a blog! It wasn't apart of the plan. But that's what's so wonderful about life. Sometimes your plans are not God's plans. So here I am, at the end of the year, humbly writing to the masses, praying that you find my package of fantastic as great as I think it is.

My prayer for this blog is to keep and increase the faith. In myself. In my choices. In sisterhood. In women. In my style. And in you. By no means am I a fashionista. Or the next prophetess come down to teach my sisters in Christ how to slay and pray. What I am is someone who is stepping out. With the confidence of 1,000 moons to present the package that is me. Withholding nothing. Except those "what if's".

Faithfully,
Brieana
